A decorative alternative to using a downspout, rain chains make a water feature out of transporting rainwater downward from the gutter to the splash block, drain, or storage container.
While their purpose is largely decorative, in some cases using a downspout isn't as functional as a rain chain. Widely used in Japan, they sometimes collect rainwater for household usage, and can be found on temples.
